Saltwater Fly Fishing - Fly fishing is a fishing method to catch fish using artificial fly. The artificial fly serves the purpose to lure fish with its attractive color and provoke the fish to strike. This method is beneficial for beginners as they won't have to worry about casting another fly if the fish eats it. Fly fishing can be done in both fresh water and salt water.

In the sea, the fishes are bigger and heavier than those in freshwater, that is why tackle used for saltwater fly fishing is heavier because the fishes are more powerful. The artificial flies used are different with flies used for freshwater that usually imitates insect. Saltwater artificial flies imitate shrimp, crabs and the other small sea creatures that are usually consumed by larger fishes. Saltwater fishes target are usually tuna, salmon, striped bass [see also : fly fishing for striped bass], dorado, sea trout, red fish, bonefish and marlin.

Saltwater Fly Fishing Equipments Needed

Fly fishing method and ordinary fishing method difference is in the "lures" or flies. For the ordinary fishing method using living objects, the flies are heavier than those man made artificial flies. Because of that, ordinary fishing can use light weight fishing rods and line but still able to send the flies away flying to the target. But for fly fishing method, since the artificial flies weight less than actual flies, something heavier is needed in order for the flies to be able to be thrown away to the target. Fly fishing use special fly line that is heavier than usual lines used for bait fishing. As for saltwater fly fishing, using only heavy weighted lines are not enough overcome the wild sea, waves, and its creatures within. The salinity also needs to be kept in mind because it can cause corrosion to the fishing equipment. Because of those reasons, fresh water fly fishing equipment can not be used in saltwater fly fishing. Of course, the equipment will cost a lot more. But if you are not a professional, expensive equipment may not be affordable especially if you are new to the fly fishing. Most of beginners are thinking to dismiss the idea immediately because of the high gear price. But actually for your first time trying, using equipment with lower cost won't hurt. Since saltwater fly fishing needs heavy fishing rod and lines, pick those with enough weight but don't overdo it. Heavier fishing rod may be needed if you are going to catch giant fishes, but if you are not planning to do so, 9 weight rod will do the work just fine. Saltwater fly fishing can be done at the sea shore and also on boat. Boat fishing requires shorter rod than shore fishing.
